20) The Interview Process

How I Found A Job (8/20) The Interview Process When Rusty and I got on our first phone call he said hed like to have me come in and interview with him directly. This was a very important role and he wanted to get going as soon as he could.   Could I accommodate his quick-turn around schedule? DEFINITELY. This is RIGHT, and Ill do what I can to make it easy and smooth for him. Normally, I think, I would have had a phone screen with a recruiter, and maybe a Hirevue interview but could I come in on Monday morning? Ill be there. The speed this was happening was another sign that this was serious, and he looked at me as a good fit. It was exciting but the problem was it was more information to help me fall more in love with this company. The last company I fell in love with (12 years ago), after the interview, I started to mentally do the work. This time I fell in the same trap. I couldnt sleep at night, and was waking up at 4pm. My mind was going. Please let this happen. Please let this work. By this time, as I learned more about the company, I had already mentally discarded all of the product manager jobs I was applying for (and hadnt gotten any positive response from). Nothing was interesting to me anymore, except being on this team, in this company, to change the world. Please, let it happen. Understanding the Stock Market as an Entrepreneur While it is a relief that many small businesses are starting to recover from the global financial crisis, how many entrepreneurs understand how national economies work and how dependent everyone is on events that may take place half way around the world? How the national economy works The stock market is the barometer of a nation’s industrial health as the value of publicly traded companies rises and falls. When the US economy is growing it is a reflection of the trading success of its major multinational companies and their stock prices increase. If consumers feel financially secure they will go out and buy a whole range of high-ticket items, such as cars and bigger houses. They will take expensive vacations, visit restaurants more frequently and purchase toys and electronic devices for the kids. All this spending increases pressure on companies to hire additional staff, purchase new machinery and equipment and move into larger factories and offices. Increased profits mean salary hikes for employees and more tax paid to the IRS. Increased revenue from taxes helps to pay for infrastructure projects, such as highway construction, hospital and school building and space programs. It also helps finance improvements to the provision of healthcare and social security, When the economy begins to fail for some reason; for example, if homeowners find themselves unable to afford their mortgage repayments and begin to default in large numbers it could result in some smaller mortgage lenders going bankrupt. This in turn would lead to a lack of confidence developing in the wider population, causing them to stop spending. The overall effect is that demand for products falls, company profits decline, workers are laid off or let go and some businesses fail. The end result is that stock prices fall as investors lose faith and take their money elsewhere, perhaps putting it into overseas markets or that traditional safe haven, gold. Global financial markets Unlike the stock market, which is only open Monday to Friday, from 9.30 am to 4pm, the global financial market operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Trading on the stock market involves purchasing stock in a particular company and either keeping it for an extended time in the hope of receiving dividends and ultimately selling at an increased price or disposing of it in a matter of days or weeks to make a quick profit. The global financial market was established in order to enable international trade to develop following the end of the Second World War. It involved countries establishing flexible exchange rates for their national currencies and made it possible for companies purchasing goods from one country to know exactly how much they would have to pay in the local currency. For example one US dollar is worth approximately 102 Japanese yen. With few exceptions the value of currencies is free to float against one another. Therefore, if the Japanese economy were to falter due to a natural disaster or the election of a new political party, its value against the US$ might be expected to fall. Currencies are always traded in pairs, the four most popular being US dollar and Japanese yen, Euro and US dollar British pound sterling and US dollar and US dollar and Swiss franc. Investors in this market buy one currency in the expectation that it will either rise or fall. If that currency were to rise rather than fall they would make a loss, conversely if it were to rise, as expected they would make a profit. Traders do not physically purchase currency; they instead attempt to forecast how one currency will perform against another over a period of perhaps a few minutes or several months. Trading is facilitated by brokers operating online, using complex, largely automated trading platforms, which can be accessed by their clients via smart phones, tablets or laptops. Preparing to go public Selling stock to the public is a dream of many entrepreneurs; it is a sign that both they and their company are a success. An IPO (initial public offering) is a means of raising capital to fund growth and improve liquidity. In order to make an IPO possible the company must meet with stringent regulatory requirements and must have a strong financial base. The total cost of going public is not cheap; current estimates are around $2 million for printing, listing, legal, accounting costs and underwriter commission and discount. Take a Focus Break Take a “45-second focus break” throughout your day. Considering there are 1,440 minutes in a 24-hour period, a 45-second break really isn’t a lot of missed time.  Try taking a deep breath and focusing on yourself on your walk to a meeting, before you pick up the phone or start a new project. The 45 seconds of focus in between meetings or projects will give you a little bit of space to think more clearly and approach a situation with a fresh perspective. Be Grateful When you are thankful and appreciate both the little and big things in life, your world opens up to new possibilities.   According to a research study from Baylor University, gratitude can improve your health, relationships, energy and patience towards others. It can even make you happier. Start a gratitude journal and each day, write 3 things that you are grateful for. 5. Be Compassionate According to research at Berkeley, when you practice mindfulness, you become more compassionate to yourself and others. With mindfulness, our “awareness” of what is happening becomes more compassionate and kind. This helps us see and respond more appropriately to a situation or individual. 6.  Gain Confidence. Believe in yourself  and know that you are worthy and capable of whatever you want to achieve.  Build your  self-confidence  by recognizing what you are good at. Book review Join me - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Danny Wallace started a cult by accident. He placed an add in the newspaper saying simply Join me. Send a passport sized photograph to. And people did. Now he only had one problem: People were kinda curious to see what theyd joined, and he still had no idea himself. In Join Me, The true story of a man who started a cult by accident, Danny Wallace tells that story and it makes for a great read as the movement starts humbly and then goes on to make many people happy and Danny a minor celebrity in Belgium. This book left me feeling glad that a weird guy like Danny is out there, expanding the realm of what is possible, making the world a better place and telling his story in such an entertaining way. 3 Kinds of Self-Awareness You Need to Succeed in Your Career How self-aware are you really? I’m asking because self-awareness is foundational to career success and frankly to success in all of life. When you're more self-aware, you can better manage yourself in the moment to lead and influence others, to get better results and better opportunities. When it comes to your career, there are three aspects of self-awareness that are particularly important. 1. Self-Awareness of your triggers and your reactions to them The first is being aware of your own triggers. These are the people and events around you that allow you be at your best rather than your worst. For example, in my career I loved getting feedback. I thrived on feedback, but I didn't always get it. At times in my career I found myself in a no-feedback culture and being in that environment often led me to have negative thoughts and self-talk that hurt my performance. Another past trigger for me was the daily morning team meeting we used to have back in my corporate days. It was a chance for those of us who covered clients to update the rest of the department and I thought of it as a giant “chest-pounding” exercise. This meeting would trigger me to really shrink back and become quiet because I didn't like promoting myself and talking about my activities with my clients in front of all my peers. Unfortunately, this behavior wasn’t helpful to my career. So, be aware of these types of triggers and your instinctive reactions to them. 2. Self-Awareness of how you’re landing with others The second aspect is to be aware of how you might be triggering other people to be at their best or their worst. For example, maybe you're the kind of person who walks down the hall and doesn't say “hello” because you’re deep in thought or because you want to respect the other person's privacy as they may be deep in thought. Well this situation might trigger the other person to think, “She's not very friendly” or “She didn’t say ‘hello,’ she doesn't even remember my name.” Another case might be if you have a micromanaging boss and you’re not the kind of person who volunteers updates. As a recovering micromanager, I can tell you that getting no updates or feedback really freaks us out because it feels like we have no idea whether you're even working on the assignment. This type of perception of you from your micromanaging boss is not helpful to your career either. So, be aware of how you're landing with others. 3. Self-Awareness of how your routine behavior impacts your future opportunities The third aspect to be aware of is how the things that you habitually do, the things that are routine that you don't even think about anymore, might be affecting your future opportunities. For example, I was always a great note taker. I got compliments on note taking. I enjoyed note taking. But then roll the clock forward 5-7 years and I was a pretty senior professional, sitting in meetings and playing the “note taker” role. It got to the point where my big boss had to come to me and say, “May, would you stop taking notes. You come across like an administrative assistant rather than somebody who's a future managing director.” Now, that was a real wake-up call for me about my own career-limiting behavior. As another example, you might be hanging around with the same circle of colleagues and friends as you always have. You have fun, it's comfortable, maybe you help each other and it's great. But you know what? That’s the circle you need to expand if you're going to put yourself in front of bigger, better opportunities. Otherwise you'll be more likely to keep being perceived as that same former, junior person. Be aware of your habitual actions that might have implications for the future. Self-Awareness is the first step to any kind of change When you want to continue to progress and get to the next level of your career, whatever that might be and however you might define it, then what got you here won't get you there. Self-awareness will enable you to make the kind of changes necessary to grow as a person and in your career. Self-awareness is the first step to any kind of change. When you’re conscious of the decisions you're making, then you have a better chance of putting yourself in a great position career-wise.
